With our own exhibition stand and the final of the Next Big Thing at this year’s International Confex, it wasn’t exactly like we were short of things to do at ExCel. Having said that, we still managed to show off a few great acts at Lime Venue Portfolio’s The Unusual Made Easy showcase which took place on the second day of Confex.
Much like the previous year’s event at the Old Royal Naval College, the Unusual Made Easy aims to showcase the latest in quirky, innovative event ideas from a range of suppliers. This year’s even took place in the South Gallery Rooms at ExCel and featured the catering talents of Payne and Gunter who provided a selection of inventive twists on bowl and finger food ranging from picnic inspired dessert sandwiches to salad cocktails.
Drinks came courtesy of Bibendum Wine, Bash Bars and Moolson Coors who, in addition to the usual selection of wines and soft drinks offered up a selection of beers along with a beer tasting expert to help guests appreciate the subtle differences in the drinks. Other suppliers included Karen Woolven Floral Design, Production by MCL, Bearfoot Graphics, Tubestation.tv and Eventologists.
As for the entertainment, the event gave last year’s Next Big Thing winner Iona Thomas a chance to show why she was the obvious choice to win the competition. Performing a selection of stripped back arrangements of pop songs on guitar and harp, Iona was the perfect musical accompaniment for the event. Having just returned from touring with Laura Mvula, the event was perhaps a little smaller than Iona was used to, but hopefully no less exciting to play at.
Elsewhere, we provided a quirky twist on the ubiquitous Living Statue with our Living Topiary Duo. The pair are sure to prove a perennial favourite (tree joke) at corporate events over the coming months, it being spring and all. We expect them to go down especially well at events for hedge fund managers or people who like making plant-based puns. iPad magician Dan was also on hand to wow guests with some touch screen based magic.
