The Ned Flanders-Inspired Metal Band – Ooh, Interesting! Fascinating Facts

February 07, 2020

When it comes to starting a band, it can be hard to get noticed. Whether you are performing jazz or heavy metal, it can be hard to come up with something that will ensure that you are not only noticed but remembered. One heavy metal band from Phoenix, Arizona has solved this problem – they’ve themed their band after Ned Flanders from The Simpsons.

Okilly Dokilly dress like Ned Flanders, go by names such as Head Ned, Shred Ned and Dread Ned and have just announced a US tour. They claim that they don’t play metal music but ‘Nedal’ music and the majority of the lyrics to their songs are quotes from Ned Flanders. In short, it’s everything a Simpsons metal fan could ever want in a band.

It’s fair to say that the band have indeed been noticed for their unique gimmick. Their first album was titled Howdilly Doodilly, their second is called Howdilly Twodilly and they describe their sound as “not as fast as Bartcore and a little cleaner than Krusty Punk.” For those unfamiliar with metal, Head Ned was referencing hardcore punk and crust punk respectively. It’s fair to say that this band go the whole ding dong diddly.

Due to head out on the ‘When the Comet Gets Here’ tour in 2020 – a reference to the classic Simpsons episode Bart’s Comet, wherein Ned is forced out of his own bomb shelter to face the comet head-on - tickets are sure to be snapped up fast and you don’t have to go to The Leftorium to buy them.

Modelling your entire band after a popular cartoon character seems like a bold choice. That being said, it has clearly worked out for Okilly Dokilly who not only have 71,000 likes on their Facebook page but have also been featured on numerous metal websites like Consequence of Sound. And to top it all off? Their band gained the attention of producers of The Simpsons; Okilly Dokilly appeared during the end credits of The Simpsons episode ‘I’m Just a Girl Who Can’t Say D’oh’ in April 2019.
