As one of London’s most recognisable and iconic venues, the National Gallery has proved to be a highly desirable and exclusive event venue, offering a wealth of different rooms and spaces for everything from private to corporate events. The events team at the gallery don’t advertise or generally hold promotional events so this week’s ‘Secret View’ event was a rare and welcome opportunity to experience what the venue has to offer.
With talks, guided tours and utterly fascinating drawing lessons, the National Gallery already had plenty to offer before the suppliers even showed up, but had they not we would have been denied the chance to try bowl food and canapés from expert event caterers Alison Price & Company who’s waiting staff were politely mobbed every time they emerged with new trays. Event florists Veevers Carter created their own mini works of art with a series of beautiful floral displays while tasteful lighting and production was provided by Event Concept with glasses topped up by premier Italian Prosecco producers Follador.
To help set the mood for the evening, we supplied a couple of our latest entertainment concepts that we felt best suited the venue’s individual character. First up was this year’s Next Big Thing winner Iona Thomas who performed an eclectic mix of pop covers ranging from Rihanna to Kings of Leon. Though the Harp is a familiar sight for corporate event and wedding guests, the streamlined electric harp offers a more portable and unusual twist on a traditional instrument and Iona’s breathtaking voice compliments her softly plucked harp perfectly.
Offering another twist on traditional corporate event entertainment was our caricaturist Chrissy who, rather than relying on the usual paper and pencils, took inspiration from David Hockney with a series of caricatures on the iPad. One of the main appeals of using an iPad for caricatures is the ability to email or tweet the caricatures, making them available instantly electronically (and cutting down on paper). The iPad caricaturist was a great fit for an event intended to show off some of the unexpected features of an already beloved venue.
