Ooh, Interesting! Fascinating Facts - Half-Drag Portrait Photos by Leland Bobbé

August 26, 2016

We often say that there are two sides to every person and in the case of Drag Queens, that’s certainly true. But what lies beneath the makeup? New York-based photographer Leland Bobbé captured a whole host of these performers in his exhibition Half-Drag… A Different Kind of Beauty, which we are showcasing below.

Make-up is often used in events, but quite how much of a change it gives to the artists is often hard to decipher. With this fabulous photography series, Bobbé offers a refreshing perspective on gender fluidity and taps into the more vulnerable side of performers, away from their often extravagant and flamboyant personalities.

As he himself put it, “My intention is to capture both – the masculine and the feminine side – of these subjects in one image. I wanted to explore the cross over between males and females and break down the physical barriers that separate them.”

The idea came from Bobbé seeing a burlesque model whose costume was divided into a male and female side. After photographing him and receiving a good reaction, Bobbé went further and shot 64 more portraits across the New York drag scene, with each model only taking up to two hours to get ready and being shot for just 45 minutes. No photoshopping has been used in the composition of each shot and the best bit? Teenagers have written to him to say they feel empowered and more comfortable in their own skin. Wonderful.
