When you think of world class art museums and galleries, your mind instantly flits between the major cities of the world. New York, Paris, London. It’s true, these cities do have more than their fair share of wonderful cultural attractions in the form of the MoMA, the Louvre and the National Gallery. But what about those buildings that are a little further afield, the ones that completely regenerate an area and become the focal point for a visit? This most notably was the case with the gorgeous Guggenheim art museum in Bilbao and hopefully the Turner Contemporary will do the same for Margate.
You read that right. There is a world class free art gallery in Margate, a seaside town on the Kent coastline and events there would be absolutely stunning. The building itself has been open for five years and attracted the great and the good from the art world with Tracey Emin being a huge advocate for the building, but for some reason it’s been a little overlooked in the events world. Why is this, when the space is so perfect for both private parties and corporate events? Many people see London as the must visit destination but for a fraction of the cost, the Turner Contemporary allows you to escape what many view as an overly busy capital city and allows your guests to enjoy not only a fine building but magnificent sea air and stunning views to boot!
As you enter the building, you’re treated to a large open area with a stunning glass wall allowing the sunlight to stream in. This place could be transformed with more than a few pieces of entertainment; perhaps it’s the perfect place for a DJ to have their decks (the skyline would be incredible at night), or maybe a few strolling acts like a magician or Living Topiary can entertain attendees? After all, what is art if not walking hedge-shaped humans?
There are a number of areas available for parties and corporate events including exclusive use of the café area as well as a few of the other rooms. An art gallery is a little like a cultural blank canvas for events, especially modern art galleries like the Tate Modern, and it seems a shame that this amazing space – just a 90 minute train ride from London – has been overshadowed by its London counterparts. Once you book the venue, as well as enjoying the finest in Sternberg Clarke entertainment, you could of course check out the gallery itself – artists including Ai Weiwei and Marina Abramovic are currently exhibiting some of their work there, but the beauty of the building is that the exhibitions are always changing.
Our first event at the Turner Contemporary in Margate will be at the end of January and we couldn’t be more excited about utilising this magnificent venue to its full effect! So if you have any ideas for a corporate event or wedding then get in touch and let’s make it happen! The Turner Contemporary is a cracking new place for events!
