You might think that sporting stars are prohibitively expensive to book as after dinner speakers and whilst that may be true when it comes to booking Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray or Lionel Messi, it’s not quite so true for the retired sportsmen and women that used to dominate the headlines on Grandstand (remember that?) and let’s be honest, these are the folk that we most remember anyway. Without further ado then, here are five great sports speakers for your next event.
Pictured above, Francis Benali was a bit of a cult figure in his day, playing for Southampton from 1988 until the early 2000s. A full back who in some years would seemingly be the most printed sticker in our Merlin or Panini packs, he was an accomplished player who played at Wembley on three occasions and has since gone on to start a company with his former Saints teammate, Matt Le Tissier. Perhaps Francis’ most impressive achievements have come after retirement; he completed a 1,000 mile charity challenge to run between all 20 Premier League grounds in 2014 and just last year completed an Ultra Marathon by running and cycling between all 44 grounds of the Premier League and Championship. A true inspiration to any young athlete.
As charismatic as they come, Austin Healey has won awards for his after dinner speaking and it’s not hard to see why when you watch the video above. Blessed with some brilliant comic timing and quality one liners, you’ll hear from the versatile rugby union player, who excelled for the Leicester Tigers throughout the 1990s and into 2006. Amassing over 50 caps for England, he’ll tells stories about Clive Woodward, Jonny Wilkinson and who knows, perhaps his current work as a pundit for BT Sport.
Dame Ellen MacArthur
Picture the scene: 100 days alone at sea, circumnavigating the globe. Now imagine being 21 years old and doing it. Not content with managing to do that, Dame Ellen MacArthur decided to complete the challenge once again, this time looking to be the fastest person to achieve this impressive feat, capturing the world’s attention in the process. Crossing the finishing line in just 71 days, Ellen was made a Dame in early 2005, aged just 28 years of age. Hear from her as she tells you about the gruelling conditions and how the human body can do anything as long as you put your mind to it.
Danny Crates is one of the UK's most successful paralympic athletes of the past decade. A former Paralympic world record holder in the 800m, where he won Paralympic Gold at the Sydney Games - he has also won every major title including The World Championships, European Championships and The Paralympic World Cup. A leading motivational speaker, he delivers keynote presentations around the world and is a role model for ambitious youngsters all across the UK.
Let’s get one thing straight right now: Clare Balding is a national treasure. In fairness, you probably knew that whether you first followed her on Channel 4’s racing coverage or perhaps became a huge fan as she anchored the BBC’s 2012 Olympic coverage from London. Awarded the BAFTA Special Award and RTS Presenter of the Year Award for her London 2012 efforts, there is nothing that Clare Balding cannot do and it’s fair to say that if you want to know exactly how sports broadcasting works, hiring Clare Balding would be a brilliant idea.
