Felipe the Spaceman @ the Tate Modern

May 04, 2017

Clients often get in touch with requests that we immediately believe we can do without too much difficulty. A band at the Gherkin? Fine. A beatboxing troupe at Banqueting House? Say no more. A mega celeb to host an awards ceremony? Too easy. Although 95% of entertainment bookings operate in this way, there is always the 5% that gives us a short pause for thought before wading in.

“Is it possible to have a spaceman descend from the ceiling of Turbine Hall, spinning as he goes, before turning into Buzz Aldrin?” For some reason, that’s the sort of query that we relish, despite knowing that although it’s possible, it’s going to take an awful lot of hard work! With Buzz already on board for this extravaganza, we felt we had to do the right thing and confirm that this was absolutely doable. The only thing we required was a dress rehearsal a full 24 hours beforehand because this is an event piece that absolutely had to go right, no questions asked.

When hiring a circus performer, you look for someone who is completely fearless and a consummate professional every time. To this end, we turned to Felipe to don the spacesuit costume and fly through the eaves of Turbine Hall. We’ll be honest, if the client had requested for us to do flips as we flew through the air a good fifty feet up, we’re not sure we’d have been able to do it without a severe headache and contracting the shakes upon landing. To Felipe though, this was all in a day’s work. To be fair to him, how often do you get to recreate the most famous shot in Gravity and count the second man to walk on the moon as your co-star?

At this point, we would be remiss not to mention the exceptional work of the production and rigging teams at the Tate Modern. To put on this spectacle was nothing short of mesmerising! As you can see from the photos, it wasn’t just Felipe who they had to put into the air; numerous lights and scaffolding were put in place to ensure that this was going to be the celebration of the year!

After rehearsing the exact nature of this circus display a number of times the previous day, it was time for the main event. Felipe was suited and booted in his outfit and rather wonderfully, so was Buzz (think Queen Elizabeth’s arrival at London 2012). It was an astonishing entrance for the former astronaut and was so impressive that numerous celebrities filmed the occasion and uploaded footage to Instagram. Want to see what it was like?
