Cited by Le Gateau Chocolat as one of his main inspirations, former Star of La Clique Ali McGregor was one act we couldn’t afford to miss on our final night in Edinburgh and the classically trained Soprano didn’t disappoint with cabaret show that deftly straddled the disparate worlds of pop culture, Jazz and opera.
Dressed in glittery high-heels and backed by her faithful Jazz Trio, Ali combined her love for the great jazz singers (Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn et al) with her weakness for trashy pop from the 80s and 90s (some of which were lost on Sternberg Clarke Wedding Coordinator Alice what with her being young). Even the most grating 90s dance tunes received the same due care and attention as they were transformed into sultry Jazz numbers… oh I get it… Alchemy…yes.
Everything about the show was honed to perfection; even down to the lighting and production, her stage presence and inter-song patter funny and warm without ever slipping into over sentimentality. Opening with Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, Ali and her band moved through an eclectic mix of unexpected jazz arrangements including INXS, Kiss, Britney Spears, The Foo fighters, Salt N Pepa, Blur, The Prodigy and even Aqua ‘s Barbie Girl. Ali’s voice was magnificent and faultless throughout, sassy and sensual, yet playful and light-hearted.
