Cirque du Soleil Have a Show Based on Lionel Messi – Ooh, Interesting! Fascinating Facts

November 29, 2019

When it comes to Cirque du Soleil, there are a host of shows ongoing all around the world at any one time. If you go on the official website, you can book tickets for no less than 29 shows, which serves to highlight just how popular their blend of circus and narrative storytelling really is. But did you know that they also have a show based on the world’s best footballer*, Lionel Messi?

We have reviewed a Cirque du Soleil show on these pages before; Kooza was a stunning blend of circus and colour that had utterly enthralled from start to finish. That show is still playing in Madrid but if you hop over to Barcelona instead, you’ll be met by a very different kind of show which we are fairly certain will never ever play in Madrid. Yes, Messi10 tells the life of Argentina and Barcelona super star Lionel Messi in circus form.

This is not the first time that Cirque du Soleil have taken on a different style of subject matter. They have circuses currently running that are inspired by the music of The Beatles (Love) and Michael Jackson (One). This does appear to be the first time though, that they have put together a show based on a sports star though, and one at the top of his game. As Lionel Messi said about his own show, “It's usually done as homage to people who are no longer with us. It was very difficult to mix football and circus and the fact that they were inspired by me was surprising so it was a very nice feeling.”

So aside from being about Lionel Messi, what is Messi10 actually about? What does it feature? From the description it certainly sounds interesting: ‘a euphoric 90-minute thrill ride that combines breathtaking physical performance with unthinkable poetic wonder. Experience an explosive live-show where the stadium’s electric atmosphere meets the theatre’s intimacy.’ We like the fact that it’s 90 minutes, presumably chosen because that is the length of a football match, but also perhaps because it’s hard to make a theatrical circus show about Lionel Messi. We have to admit that the trailer doesn’t really reveal anything either – acrobats appear to feature but apart from that we are mostly in the dark.

Messi10  has been in the works for over two years and plays in Barcelona until January 4th 2020 before playing in Argentina (obviously) for a month next summer. If you’d like to book tickets, we honestly have no idea what you can expect but interestingly there is another possibility for you to see parts of this particular Cirque du Soleil performance; because of Barcelona’s association with Internet giant Rakuten you can actually watch a documentary about Messi10 if you own a Roku device.

* Unless you're in the Cristiano Ronaldo camp of course. But where's his Cirque du Soleil show, eh?
