When one thinks of ‘Arabian Nights’ what is the first image that comes to mind? Ali Baba and the forty thieves? Aladdin? When we were contacted to provide entertainment for just such an event, we thought hard about how to deliver a combination of background entertainment a headline set later in the evening.
The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge is a hotel that offers a number of functions including celebratory dinners and gala events. It is centrally located and provides a great basis on which to hold your party. That being said, if one were to see the building, your first thought probably wouldn’t involve Arabian Nights. Nevertheless we enjoy a challenge and as a party theme, we love it when clients select something we don’t often get to do. With the live action version of Aladdin due for release later this year, we expect that we will have a few more Arabian Nights-themed events soon but for now it’s very much a rarity.
After taking into consideration the dimensions of the room and the requirements of the client, we ultimately settled on first providing some zaffa drummers to set the mood of the evening. As Wikipedia notes, ‘In Arab culture, the zaffa is a musical procession of bendir drums, bagpipes, horns, belly dancers and men carrying swords.’ An ancient tradition, we may not have been able to deliver everything along those lines – carrying flaming swords is generally frowned upon in Westminster Bridge - but we had the inklings of how we would like the evening to progress. Our three zaffa drummers played for three sets of twenty minutes each and provided a unique form of entertainment for the party.
But how best to do the headline show? For this, we required a 5-8 minute performance that everybody would enjoy from the comfort of their tables and ultimately we brought in top dance troupe Plague to deliver a bespoke show involving six dancers that had the audience cheering throughout. Not only did they deliver exceptional moves that had to be seen to be believed, but they also managed some breakdancing; one dancer even spun on his head. It really was incredible to see.
A hugely fun and unique event, we cannot wait for more exciting party themes to come our way and feel that our Arabian Nights entertainment could well be the start of something very special indeed.
