Since graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2000, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Tamar has been making her mark across the globe in a wide variety of musical fields, specializing in (but not restricted to) baritone saxophone.
Internationally her performances have included residencies and tours with house, chillout and hiphop DJs in the UK, Portugal, Malaysia, Greece and India; jazz/Indian-classical fusion in Kolkata (with Ravi Shankar’s tabla player Tanmoy Bose); prestigious brand launches in Dubai and Bangladesh; Afrobeat in Paris, Portugal and Ibiza; big band jazz in Cuba; klezmer-tinged blues & funk in London and acoustic jazz-folk in Berlin.
Back in the UK she continues to develop her work with DJs (often adding flute and clarinet to her eclectic mix), but also plays everything from Afrobeat (with Dele Sosimi, formerly Fela Kuti's keyboard player) to electronica, via Brazilian samba rock, jazz funk, touring theatre and opera, singer-songwriter projects and space jazz!
Performance venues have included the National Theatre (in the recent acclaimed production of Fela!), the Jazz Cafe, Vortex Jazz Club, Cargo, Band on the Wall (Manchester), the MAC (Birmingham), Exeter Phoenix, Guanabara, Notting Hill Arts Club, Vibe Bar, Passing Clouds and the Royal Festival Hall. She has also appeared at Glastonbury (with the Bootleg Beatles), and with Dele Sosimi at WOMAD, Festival Musica Mundo in Portugal and on BBC radio's World on 3.
Tamar is also session sax and multi-wind player of choice for a number of up-an-coming and established producers (appearing on the soundtrack for Blood and Gifts at the National Theatre, and on albums by Spiritualized, Simon Bookish, Demis Roussos and Smith&Mudd amongst others) and writes music for her own projects.
"Tamar was fantastic as always and I think really added to the event."
